Nerve glides help to stretch and move nerves through their pathways. Nerves can become impinged between different structures causing pain at the site and/or radiating pain in the limb. Nerve glides or flossing can help to free the injured nerve up.
The nerve glide shown in the pictures is for the Sciatic Nerve which runs in the buttocks and down the back of the leg. When this nerve is irritated, you can experience burning or electric pain in that pathway. Performing this simple movement of pointing and flexing the feet in a seated position can help to slowly reduce the pain by freeing up the nerve.
There are many different nerve glides for nerves in the legs and in the arms. In physical therapy, you will often use these movements in combination with other exercises to improve the pain you are experiencing.
