Let's Talk About Your Bones!


Since it is almost Halloween, let's talk about bones. Osteoporosis and osteopenia affects around 55% of the population over the age 50, majority are women, but men can get it too. Osteoporosis literally mean "porous bone" and is where the body does not make enough bone to keep up with bone you are losing resulting in a decrease in bone density. This can make it easier to fracture a bone.

Often doctors will put patients of a certain age on calcium supplements to help counter act the progression, but exercise is another way patients can help to slow the progression. Weight bearing exercises such as walking and squats can help to reduce bone loss and help to retain remaining bone tissue. Exercise will also improved your overall fitness to increase strengthening and mobility which will improve balance, reducing the risk of falling.
