I Just Woke Up. Why Do I Already Hurt?

“I went to bed to recover. Somehow I woke up needing to recover from sleeping.”

Did I Sleep… or Get Hit by a Truck?

My feet hit the floor this morning and my body had one question:

“What happened to us last night?”

My back was stiff.

My neck didn't want to turn.

My knees needed a minute.

And those first few steps?

Let's just say they weren't pretty.

The crazy part is—I didn't do anything.

I went to sleep.

Wasn't that supposed to be the recovery part?

So I do what a lot of us do.

I stretch a little.

Walk around.

Maybe take something.

And eventually my body “warms up” enough that I can get on with my day.

Until tomorrow morning...

When we do the whole thing again.

When Did This Become Normal?

It's easy to laugh it off.

“I'm getting old.”

“I slept wrong.”

“Give me ten minutes and I'll loosen up.”

But if your body regularly needs a morning negotiation just to get moving, it may be worth paying attention.

Stiffness can have many causes, and sometimes things like reduced mobility, muscle weakness, inactivity, an old injury, or how your body is moving throughout the day can contribute.

And that's where we may be able to help.

At Primacare Physical Therapy, we look at how your body moves, where you're limited, and what may be contributing to the problem—then work with you to improve mobility, strength, and function.

Because waking up shouldn't feel like the hardest thing you do all day.

Tomorrow morning, pay attention.

How long does it take before your body finally feels like your body again?

If the answer is “way too long,” maybe it's time to stop calling it normal.
